Bar & Restaurant

2006 | PARAMARIBO, SURINAME

As part of the recreation space for the resort of Waterland, the beach bar was designed to be a very flexible space to accomadate a variety of functions and groups sizes of visitors.  It shall host events for the locals as well as docked sailors and tourists on holiday.  During the rainy season, this area gets hit with strong rain and in the dry season, extreme heat.

The form of the bar was developed from the curving lines of the river banks and the direction of the sun, wind and rain.  By using poured concrete on site, the possibility of making a fluid shape allowed several different spaces to be created for the different functions desired by the client.  The higher roofs mark the two distinct areas of the bar and kitchen as the lower roof creates a dynamic space that joins the two while directing the view out to the Suriname River.  The wooden deck extends beyond the covered space and out towards the river like a wooden dock that leads to the private beach.  The structure has a direct open relationship to the east in order to capture as much westward wind as possible to naturally ventilate the space.

A system of movable rain screens block the water while allowing in light and views out. The area between the lower and upper roofs is protected from the rain with louvered glass panes that will light up the bar at night like a lantern and also allow for ventilation.
